Abstract
The power penalty induced by PM-AM conversion noise is evaluated by calculating its power spectrum at receiving end and using Personick-CCITT BER calculating method. Experimental results of 2.5Gb/s 300 km transmission are also presented to show the effects of the noise. The relationships between SBS threshold and laser linewidth in ASK(amplitudeshiftedkeying) modulated systems are analyzed. In designing high speed externally modulated systems, the transmission limitation set by both of effects usually must be considered.
