The history of laser weapon development in US, former Soviet Union, Germany, France and other foreign countries is reviewed, and the current programs in the United States, including the development milestones and the up-to-date tests are described. The experiences and lessons of their development are summarized, and the development tendency and application prospect of high energy weapons are discussed. It is concluded that the new generation of compact and energy-saved high energy lasers are developing rapidly, the tactical weapons will become compact, universal and popular, and the widely used FELs will continue to develop forward.
