An experimental investigation of two-color polarization spectroscopy (TCPS) is presented based on the cesium 6S1/2 – 6P3/2 – 8S1/2 (852.3 nm + 794.6 nm) ladder-type system in a room-temperature vapor cell. The dependency of line shapes of TCPS on the power of a 852.3 nm pump and a 794.6 nm probe laser is measured in detail, and we confirm that the linewidth of TCPS in a counter-propagating configuration between the pump and probe laser beams is obviously narrower than that of a co-propagating configuration, due to the atomic coherence effect. It is helpful for laser stabilization of the excited state transition using TCPS without frequency modulation.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate a simple modulation-free scheme for offset locking the frequency of a laser using buffer gas-induced resonance. Our scheme excludes the limitation of low diffraction efficiency and laser input intensity when an acousto-optic modulator is applied to shift the laser frequency from the resonance. We show the stabilization of a strong 795-nm laser detuned up to 550 MHz from the 87Rb 5S1/2F=2->5P1/2 F'=2 transition. The locking range can be modified by controlling the buffer gas pressure. A laser line width of 2 MHz is achieved over 10 min.

We investigate theoretically two-photon absorption spectroscopy modified by a control field in a confined Y-type four-level system. Dicke-narrowing effect occurs both in two-photon absorption lines and the dips of transparency against two-photon absorption due to enhanced contribution of slow atoms. We also find that the suppression and the enhancement of two-photon absorption can be modified by changing the strength of the control field and the detuning of three laser fields. This control of two-photon absorption may have some applications in information processing and optical devices.

Rate coefficients for energy-pooling (EP) collisions Rb(5P_(J))+Cs(6P_(3/2))-->Rb(5S_(1/2))+Cs(nl_(J')) have been measured. Atoms were excited to Rb(5P_(J)) and Cs(6P_(3/2)) states using two single-mode diode lasers. To isolate the heteronuclear contribution in the fluorescence spectrum, a double-modulation technique has been adopted. The excited-atom density and spatial distribution are mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counterpropagating single-mode diode laser beam, tuned to Rb(5P_(J)-->7S_(1/2)) and Cs(6P_(3/2)-->8S_(1/2)) transitions respectively, which could be translated parallelly to the pump beams. The excited atom densities are combined with the measured fluorescence ratios to determine cross sections for the EP processes. It was found that Rb(5P_(J))+Cs(6P_(3/2)) collisions are more efficient than Rb(5P_(3/2))+Cs(6P_(3/2)) collisions for populating Cs(4F_(5/2)), while the opposite is true for populating Cs(4F_(7/2)).

A Nd:YAG pulsed laser is used to ablate HgCdTe target at different ambient pressures, the emission spectrum is detected by a time- and space-resolved diagnostic technique. It is found that the characteristics of time-resolved emission spectra are influenced by the pressure of background gas. A theoretical model is developed to investigate expansion mechanism of plasma, the time evolution of the propagation distances and the velocities of plasma plume are calculated by the model at pressures of 101000, 1000, and 5 Pa, respectively. The calculated results are well consistent with the experimental data.

Using the optical-optical double resonance (OODR) technique, we have studied the collisional broadening of some 2^1Delta_g<--B^1Pi_u lines in Na2 molecules. A single line Ar+ laser is used to pump the sodium dimers from thermally populated ground state X^1Sigma+_g level to the intermediate B^1Pi_u state. Then, a single-mode diode laser is used to probe the doubly excited 2^1Delta_g state. The broadening rate coefficient is determined from the slope of the total linewidth versus Ne density curve. We obtain the average value k_(br)=(1.1+-0.5)*10^(-8) cm3/s. The collisional excitation transfer between rotational levels of the B^1Pi_u state (i.e., B^1Pi_u(2,83/84)<--B^1Pi_u(2,82)) is also investigated. The rates can be determined from the relative intensities of the main peak and satellite lines, combined with a rate equation model. The rates of 1.25*10^(6) and 1.07*10^(6) /s are obtained, respectively.

Transmission sub-Doppler spectroscopy with confined atomic vapor film between two dielectric walls is theoretically studied. Because of atoms flying from wall to wall, where they get de-excited, the atom-field interaction time is anisotropic so that the contribution of slow atoms is enhanced, a sub-Doppler transmission spectroscopy (Dicke narrowing effect) can be obtained when the thickness of the film is much small or comparable with the wavelength even at small angle oblique incidence. It is feasible to get a sub-Doppler structure in a new region (L < λ/4) in experiments.
