Broadband transient reflectivity traces were measured for Bi2Se3 thin films with various substrates via a 400 nm pump–white-light-probe setup. We have verified the existence of a second Dirac surface state in Bi2Se3 and qualitatively located it by properly analyzing the traces acquired at different probe wavelengths. Referring to the band structure of Bi2Se3, the relaxation mechanisms for photo-excited electrons with different energies are also revealed and studied. Our results show a second rise of the transient reflection signal at the time scale of several picoseconds. The types of substrate can also significantly affect the dynamics of the rising signal. This phenomenon is attributed to the effect of lattice heating and coherent phonon processes. The mechanism study in this work will benefit the fabrication of high-performance photonic devices based on topological insulators.

We report a simple solution-processed method for the fabrication of low-cost, flexible optical limiting materials based on graphene oxide (GO) impregnated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sheets. Such GO–PVA composite sheets display highly efficient broadband optical limiting activities for femtosecond laser pulses at 400, 800, and 1400 nm with very low limiting thresholds. Femtosecond pump–probe measurement results revealed that nonlinear absorption played an important role for the observed optical limiting activities. High flexibility and efficient optical limiting activities of these materials allow these composite sheets to be attached to nonplanar optical sensors in order to protect them from light-induced damage.

Abstract
Using the time-dependent theory, we calculate the random-laser emission spectra in a two-dimensional strongly disordered medium. The calculation results show that in low dimensional systems, such as thinfilm disordered media and planar waveguides, the larger the difference of the refractive indices between the scattering and background media, the smaller the lasing threshold. We also reveal the existence of multimode survival and mode competition. We experimentally obtain the emission spectra of a dye solution with Al particles doped at different pumping energies, and the experimental results agree well with the calculated ones.

Abstract
Two detection techniques of broadband terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy-THz air-biased coherent detection (THz-ABCD; from 0.3 to 14 THz) and electro-optical (EO) detection (from 0.3 to 7 THz) - are both performed at several different relative humidity levels. The THz power exponentially decays with the increase in relative humidity. The dynamic range of the main pulse in the time domain linearly decreases as the relative humidity increases from 0% to 40%, and linear fittings show that the slopes are -0.017 and -0.019 for THz-ABCD and EO detection, respectively. Because of the multiple reflections caused by the crystal in the common EO detection, THz-ABCD has better spectral resolution (17 GHz) than that of EO detection (170 GHz). The spectrum of water vapor absorption measured by THz-ABCD is also compared with that measured by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Abstract
Three time-resolved terahertz (THz) spectroscopy methods (optical-pump/THz-probe spectroscopy, THz-pump/THz-probe spectroscopy, and THz-pump/optical-probe spectroscopy) are reviewed. These are used to characterize ultrafast dynamics in photo- or THz-excited semiconductors, superconductors, nanomaterials, and other materials. In particular, the optical-pump/THz-probe spectroscopy is utilized to investigate carrier dynamics and the related intervalley scattering phenomena in semiconductors. The recent development of intense pulsed THz sources is expected to affect the research in nonlinear THz responses of various materials.

The Ryderberg electronic wave packet dynamics of hydrogen atom near helium surface in an electric field is investigated using the semiclassical method. The autocorrelation function is calculated when the photoionized electron is excited by a short laser pulse for different atom-surface separations. The results show that new recurrences appear because of the helium surface, and the number of recurrent peaks increases with the decrease in atom-surface distance. The new feature is ascribed to the bifurcation of new closed orbits in the classical dynamics of the photoionized electron. Therefore, surface properties have a significant effect on the spectrum of nearby atoms or ions.

The wave packet dynamics of the photodetachment of H- near dielectric surface are studied by using the wave packet evolution and the autocorrelation function. The results show that the evolutions of the autocorrelation function and the wave packet in the time domain correspond well with each other. Besides, we consider the influence of the electronic state lifetime on the wave packet evolution and the autocorrelation function. Numerical simulation shows that the evolution of the photodetached electronic wave packet near the dielectric surface exhibits some properties similar to the time-resolved two-photon photoemission intensity of surface electron.

Time-domain diffuse optical tomography can efficiently reconstruct optical parameters which can be further applied in diagnosing early breast cancer. Nevertheless, the performances of reconstructed imaging are badly influenced by different Jacobian magnitudes of absorption coefficient and reduced scattering coefficient. With the introudction of a relative data type based on generalized pulse spectrum technique, an efficient Jacobian scaling method is proposed. The interrelated simulated validation is also revealed for the enhancing performances.

The fluorescent spectrum and the excitation spectrum were used to present the cluster molecular structure feature in ethanol-water solutions. Through analyzing the fluorescent characteristics of an excimer, it is proposed that the excimers are formed between the ethanol-water cluster molecules in the excited state and in the ground state. The fluorescent lifetime and the fluorescent intensity decay process give information about the photo-physical and photo-chemical processes of the formation and the dissociation of an excimer. The theoretical calculation and physical analysis coincide with the experimental results. The preliminary conclusion about the structure feature of ethanol-water cluster molecule is that it has a planar one like a sandwich.

A Nd:YAG pulsed laser is used to ablate HgCdTe target at different ambient pressures, the emission spectrum is detected by a time- and space-resolved diagnostic technique. It is found that the characteristics of time-resolved emission spectra are influenced by the pressure of background gas. A theoretical model is developed to investigate expansion mechanism of plasma, the time evolution of the propagation distances and the velocities of plasma plume are calculated by the model at pressures of 101000, 1000, and 5 Pa, respectively. The calculated results are well consistent with the experimental data.
