A fluorescence detection scheme is applied to image an atomic beam. Using two laser diodes as the sources of detection light and pumping light respectively, the fluorescence image of the atomic beam is then observed by a commercial CCD-camera, which is corresponding to the atomic state and velocity distribution. The detection scheme has a great utilization in the experiments of cold atoms and atomic optics.

In this paper, the performance of receiver terminals with remotely pumped preamplifiers (RPPAs) is analyzed by numerical simulation and experiment. Both simulation and experiment show that there is an optimal RPPA location and optimal pump power according to the highest performance. The amplified spontaneous Raman scattering (ASRS) self-oscillation caused by Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) and the lump reflector in transmission line are the final performance limitation.

In this paper, a distributed Bragg reflection (DBR) type Er^(3+)/Yb^(3+) co-doped fiber laser of high output power and high slope efficiency was developed. Its gain medium was a 4.45-m-long Er^(3+)/Yb^(3+) co-doped fiber. When it was pumped by a 1064-nm Nd:YAG, the linewidth of output laser was measured as 0.072 nm by 3 dB and 0.192 nm by 25 dB at 1552.08 nm. The maximum output power was measured as 69 mW. Its power stability was < 5%, side mode suppression ratio was 59 dB, and the output wavelength stability was ±0.01 nm. The laser had a threshold of 12 mW and a slope efficiency of 22%.

Polarization-dependent gain (PDG) and state of polarization (SOP) of the output signal light in Yb^(3+-) doped fiber amplifiers are studied by numerically stimulation, which showed that PDG of output signal light is not only changed with the input pump power and signal power, input polarization of pump and signal light, but also changed with the doping concentration, the cross-section anisotropy, the fiber length, the phase difference of the fiber, and so on. Moreover, SOP of the output signal light is studied. It is found that the polarization of output signal light is relative not only to the phase difference of the fiber, polarization of pump and signal light as the non-doped fiber, but also to PDG of output signal light, the cross-section anisotropy, the doping concentration, and so on, which is different to the non-doped fiber.

The performance of terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer (TOAD) has been studied by modelling the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in which the intraband effects had been taken into account. Numerical results are coincident with the experiment results. We interpret why there are three peaks in the switching window, which has never been reported before. In addition, we put forward the definition of the flatness of the switching window of TOAD for the first time By analysing the different phase of clockwise and counter clockwise signal pulse changed by SOA, appropriate peak power of control pulseand wavelength of signal and control pulse have been calculated in order to obtain large output power and flat switching window of TOAD.

In this paper, we proposed a novel optical switching method based on optical burst switching (OBS), we call it variable time-period optical switching (VTPOS). It can both support circuit services and other immerged packet services. It has better usability of bandwidth, shorter offset and latency time than others of unidirectional transport signaling mechanisms for OBS. It supports deflection switching for improve blocking performance without the need of schedule buffer. It introduces a time pointer and phase indicator that made synchronous more precisely and requires less guard time, it also classifies the different services classes with a relative QoS model.

Protein microarray technology has recently emerged as a powerful tool for biomedical research. Before automatic analysis the protein microarray images, protein spots in the images must be determined appropriately by spot segmentation algorithm. In this paper, an improved seeded region growing (ISRG) algorithm for protein microarray segmentation is presented, the seeds are obtained by finding the positions of the printed spots, and the protein spot regions are grown through these seeds. The experiment results show that the presented algorithm is accurate for adaptive shape segmentation and robust for proteinmicroarray images contaminated by noise.

In this paper, an image fusion method is proposed based on the non-separable wavelet frame (NWF) for merging a high-resolution panchromatic image and a low-resolution multispectral image. The lowfrequency part of the panchromatic image is directly substituted by multispectral image. As a result, the multispectral information of the multispectral image can be preserved effectively in the fused image. Due to multiscale method for enhancing the high-frequency parts of the panchromatic image, spatial information of the fused image can be improved. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) transform, discrete wavelet transform and separable wavelet frame inpreserving spectral and spatial information.

We have proposed and demonstrated a double-pass ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier using an optical circulator and a fiber Bragg grating as reflector. When the signal has passed through the ytterbium-doped fiber once, it reflects off a 0.2-nm passive fiber Bragg grating filter. This reduces amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise from the first pass. The input signal light is amplified both forward and backward through ytterbium-doped fiber. With this double-pass configuration, 1053.15-nm unsaturated signal gain of 28 dB, gain coefficient of 1.1 dB/mW, and noise figure of less than 4 dB are achieved at 977-nm pump power of 68 mW. It is also found that this double-pass configure provides enhancing gain coefficient and improving noise figure by comparison with single-pass configuration.

Ray-tracing method is used to simulate the distribution of absorption in crystal rod for different sidepumping configuration. The distribution of pumping power and absorption efficiency is compared, and the numerical results are presented. The results show that the more uniform pumping and the higher absorption coefficient are obtained with a diffuse cavity. And the method of the slow axis of laser diode stack perpendicular to the axis of lasing gives the higher central pumping density.

We report on the characterization of a diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG rod laser operating at high CW output power. A four-fold pump configuration is designed and the pump light is directly coupled into the Nd:YAG rod without the help of any cylindrical lenses. The distribution of pump light in the Nd:YAG rod has been calculated by using ray tracing program. The thermal lens effect of the Nd:YAG rod has been experimentally measured. A maximum output power of 800 W at 1064 nm in multimode operation is obtained for a pump power of 2400 W with 33% optical-optical efficiency. At the same time, the maximum beam parameter product of 25 mm·mrad is achieved.

Upconversion fluorescence emission of Er^(3+)-doped oxyfluorosilicate glass excited at 975 nm is experimentally investigated. The results reveal that the intense green and red emission, and weak blue emission centered at 525, 543, 655, and 410 nm, respectively. A two-photon upconversion process is assigned to the green and red emission while a three-photon process is responsible for blue upconversion. The possible upconversion mechanisms are discussed based on excited state absorption and energy transfer between excited Er^(3+) ions. The intense upconversion fluorescence of Er^(3+)-doped lead oxyfluorosilicate glass may be a potentially useful material for developing upconversion optical devices.

Ablation experiments with femtosecond (fs) laser pulse (pulse duration 37 fs, wavelength 800 nm) on organic polymers have been performed in air. The ablation threshold is found to be only several nanojoules. The diameters of the dots ablated in the organic polymers are influenced by the laser fluence and the number of laser pulses. It is observed that heat is diffused in a threadlike manner in all directions around the central focus region.Explanations of the observed phenomena are resented. A one-dimensional waveguide is also ablated in the organic polymers.

A novel designed method for tunable wavelength microcavity organic electroluminescent diode (MOLED) based on the birefringence of liquid crystal was presented. By modulated the refractive index of liquid crystal, the device could radiate with different wavelength continuously. The simulated result showed that the tunable range could reach to 60 nm and the full width of half maximum is 5.5 nm. The device could be applied to wavelength converter and tunable light source.

We report our experimental observation of charge domain oscillation in semi-insulating GaAs photoconductive semiconductor switches (PCSSs). The high-gain PCSS is intrinsically a photon-activated charge domain device. It is the photon-activated carriers that satisfy the requirement of charge domain formation on carrier concentration and device length product of 10^(12) cm^(-2). We also show that, because of the repeated process of domain formation, the domain travels with a compromised speed of electron saturation velocity and the speed of light. As a result, the transit time of charge domains in PCSS is much shorter than that of traditional Gunn domains.

The nonparaxial property of the chirped pulsed beam is analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Through the qualitative investigation of the paraxial approximation condition, we show there are chirpinduced changes in the nonparaxial propagation of the chirped pulsed beam. A quantitative nonparaxial correction was developed by use of the perturbational technic and the Fourier transform for a few-cycle chirped pulsed beam with relative small chirp parameter. It was shown that the nonparaxial corrections were enhanced near the leading or trailing edge of pulse depending on weather the chirp parameter is positive or negative. An example for pulsed Gaussian beam driven by a chirped Gaussian pulse is shown in the numerical result to confirm our analysis.
